Best (free) work spots in London

Best (free) work spots in London

There are a few things to take into account when searching for a new work space. Apart from, of course, the fact, that it’s away from your bed in your room at home. Some prefer music, others bustle or white noise. Anonymity and being surrounded by other laptop workers can be a big help. But we all need good coffee (or a decent range of teas), plug sockets and somewhere where they’ll let you sit without being pressured to spend money.

So, a working-from-London-cafes old-timer, I’ve come up with a few of the best at the moment in north, east, south, west and central.

Brunswick House, Vauxhall

A current favourite in an unlikely place on the busy Vauxhall roundabout, Brunswick House is the perfect spot. The antique-filled Georgian mansion is a spacious cafe-by-day turned trendy bar come late afternoon. It serves breakfast and bar food, has good coffee - tick - and you won’t be pestered to spend more than you want.

TimberYard, Soho / Seven Dials

Two cafes full of fellow laptop gazers, the two TY locations can get a little cramped. The coffee and food is more expensive than a usual Soho/central hipster cafe (that’s telling you something) but you’re paying for the scene and for the fact that it’s cheap for something to designed to be exactly that daily workspace you’re looking for.

The Koppel Project

A minimal exhibition space in the Baker Street area, the creative hub brings together art galleries, studios and Phaidon publisher’s bookshop. The very good direct trade coffee makes the work day a little sweeter, too.

Tate Modern, South Bank

Lots of space, air and a peaceful atmosphere located on the river. What better? There are several cafes as well as public places to sit in the new building. (And strong internet).

Look Mum No Hands, Old Street

A bike cafe for like-minded cyclists to come together; ergo a space that hosts a lot of east London freelancers. Bingo!

It’s important to keep your roaming office fresh. Thinking of new joints with a big load of work to be getting on with can be stressful so I hope this helps. Looking forward to some new space inspiration soon…
