Not long ago, studying abroad became a huge thing within college students in the United States. Europe, in particular, became extremely popular for students to go. Students can choose one place in Europe to live for the entire semester. The options of where to go are infinite. Madrid, Barcelona, Prague, Rome, Milan, Florence, are just a few places that became extremely popular to visit. The list, of course, continues. Studying abroad allows students to fully immerse themselves in a culture different from their own. Students get to spend 5 months in a foreign country which they may have very limited knowledge on. They are required to attend a university in the place they choose to go. The university can be extremely different from their home university in the United States. The environment and classes can be new and different. It gives students the opportunity to take classes that are unique to the city in which they are studying. It allows students to learn a new language, try new foods, and see new sights. Students are able to learn the way of life of where they chose to study. They get to meet all kinds of people they may have never met before. They get to spend an entire semester living in a new home and explore all it has to offer. They become locals for the semester. In addition to being stationed in one place for a whole semester, students are able to travel to various places nearby. Being in Europe allows easy travel every weekend to places they have always dreamed of going. This traveling allows students to go to different museums and historical sites that will stay with them forever. They are able to eat food they have never eaten before. They are able to encounter new people that are much different from who they are used to. They get to taste a little bit of every culture. Studying abroad allows students to become knowledgeable on much more than what they are used to. It exposes students from that bubble they may be trapped in. It opens their eyes to how others act and live. At the end of the day, abroad looks different to everyone. The experience one has abroad is defined by how that person decides to carry it out. No matter what that study abroad experience looks like, it is an incredible one that will stick with the student forever.
