Weekend trip to Budapest

Weekend trip to Budapest

One of the best things about studying abroad in Europe is that many awesome places are only an average of two-hour flight away from you (and on a budget, thanks to all the cheap airlines that operate in the old continent). Furthermore, most of those cities can be explored in two or three days, making them perfect destinations for a long weekend. Budapest, the capital of Hungary and gateway to Eastern Europe, is ideal for a quick visit. So, even if you are feeling at home in the cozy accommodation that Study Abroad Apartments found for you, it’s time to pack up a bag and explore Budapest!

You’ve heard of it, and it tops many people’s bucket list. Budapest has a long and vibrant history of entertaining and delighting its visitors with beautiful buildings, ancient history and a charm that’s second to none. There’s so much to see and do while you’re in the city – from the famous historical landmarks to the downright fun with a great party scene. It’s a European city (it’s actually two cities, Buda and Pest, separated by the river) with an eastern vibe.

When you’re there, make sure to tick all the boxes: visit the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Buda Castle and the City Park, climb the Fishermen’s Bastion for a jaw-dropping view of Budapest’s skyline, cross the chain bridge and take lots of pictures of the Danube River (you can also get some nice shots from the many boats that tour around it) and then relax and enjoy a nice craft beer downtown. Budapest is very friendly on any budget, and if you crash in a hostel or a budget hotel, and book it in advance, you can keep it under $50 per day. There are plenty of eateries (don’t leave without trying the Hungarian Goulash) and supermarkets are cheap if you fancy some snacks on the way. To get around, you can buy public transportation tickets to ride Budapest’s thick network of trams, buses and subways: a single trip ticket will set you back just a bit more than $1.

And if you’re up for a bit of R&R, you’ll love to hear that Budapest has many thermal baths. Bathing is a popular pastime for both locals and tourists here, and some of the places they have (such as Géllert or Szécheny) are gorgeous old-fashioned baroque buildings. After a good bath time, you’ll feel energized to try one of the many bars, pubs and discos located in old buildings and venues: a night like no other!

Budapest is wonderful all year round. Winter will provide you amazing snow shots if you can endure the low temperatures, while on summer you’ll get a feel of the city’s welcoming outdoor life. And if you are around for a bit longer, you are just a train ride away from many places like Vienna or Bratislava. Why not visit twice?
