Where to find the best croquetas in Madrid

Where to find the best croquetas in Madrid

Croquetas, or croquettes, are a star product from the Spanish cuisine. You’ll see them in the traditional tapas format, but they are also making their way to restaurant menus and even became a true gourmet food. Croquetas admit multiple types of filling and one of the things that is most valued is their batter, which must be crispy and well-made. Some of the best, according to the lovers and fans, are to be found in Madrid. If you are in this city studying abroad or just visiting, here’s some you don’t want to miss.

Viavélez

Hands-down one of the best in town. Thin, crispy, smooth bechamel and supreme taste. Classic flavors, such as ham, are a must try. Their menu is full of traditional Spanish dishes that you should consider ordering as well.

El Quinto Vino

Ham croquetas from El Quinto Vino (actually, they are made by Esperanza, the owner’s wife) are homemade, rich and filling. This very traditional tavern will look great on your Instagram while you enjoy some of their tapas and dishes and drink some of their wide choices of wine.

La Gastro de Chema

Quite the opposite as the previous two options, La Gastro is a rather new establishment where one can order all kinds of croquetas, and most of them cannot be found elsewhere: “liquid” croquetas made of cheese, tomato jam and olives, prawn and kimchi croquetas, cuttlefish croquetas (ink included), foie croquetas, etcetera. It’s worth and funny to try them all and pair them with some other delicious tapas and an artisan craft beer.

Casa Julio

Back to the classics, this tavern by the Malasaña neighborhood once visited by U2 also presents some varieties of croquetas, such as spinach or blood sausage, that will surprise you.

The Original Globet Croquettes

You’d probably walk by this one and barely notice it, as it’s just a corner booth on Mercado de Antón Martín, but you shouldn’t. It has more than ten flavors of creamy, round croquetas, like blue cheese, goat cheese or mushroom mix. Stop by for some!
